12 Days of Goating Wish List
We at Allegheny GoatScape are incredibly grateful to everyone who has supported us this year! It has been both awesome and humbling to have so many folks step in and provide extra financial support or offer time and energy on the ground to make this year such a success. To finish out 2024 and usher in 2025 we are looking to get a little more help with what we are going to call our 12 Days of Goating! - 12 days to identify a few (animal-related) everyday items to purchase for our goats and donkeys.
Beginning December 25th we will feature an item a day that is on our wishlist for our animals. Most items will be found at Chewy or Tractor Supply, but a few might be a bit harder to come by. We will have everything linked on our 12 Days of Goating Wish List on our website!
2024 has been a testament that we cannot accomplish our work without your generosity. Again, thank you for supporting our animals and the work we do! So begins our 12 Days of Goating!
On the 1st day of Goating our amazing supporters gave to us: Donkey Halters! Our donkey halters have seen better days and we would like to purchase a new one for each of our four beloved mini donkeys: Hobo, Sunshine, Diamond, and Pete, that correctly fit their respective, adorable heads. We are asking for these miniature donkey halters that can be purchased from Foster Hill Farm.
On the 2nd day of Goating our amazing supporters gave to us: Donkey Leads! Day one our featured items were donkey halters, and day two is the second piece that goes with that so we may safely move our donkey pals from one project site to the next, donkey leads! We currently have two, but would love to get two more so each donkey has their own that travels with them. We would love the cotton leads featured on our Chewy wish list!
On the 3rd day of Goating our amazing supporters gave to us: another item for our sweet donkey friends, Fly Leg Wraps! Each year during the summer months the flies bother our donkeys and bite their legs; it’s an equine thing. Thankfully, these wraps are incredibly helpful at preventing the flies from nipping our friends at their heels! Hobo, Diamond, Pete and especially Sunshine wear their pair out quickly when they have them on. We would love to purchase a few more pairs for our herd guardians. We love the bright pink ones from our Chewy wish list as if they fall off we can easily find them!
On the 4th day of Goating our amazing supporters gave to us : Brushes For Our Goats And Donkeys! Some people are often surprised when we mention that our animals love being brushed! In fact, oftentimes the goats will line up waiting for their turn to be brushed, or just scooch their way right into the front. The metal curry combs from our Chewy wish list are great for brushing the goats in the spring as they lose their winter undercoats and great for helping get any burs or ticks off of the animals when they are out amongst the thick vegetation. Did you know that brushing helps increase blood flow which helps improve the skin and coat health of our animals!
On the 5th day of Goating our amazing supporters gave to us: a topical cream called NuStock. It does wonders helping to heal wounds and regrow hair. We use this ointment frequently to help our animals quickly heal cuts, bald spots from rubbing their heads too much, or to support goats like our sweet boy Oreo, who has a skin condition and loses hair; NuStock keeps his coat healthy and fur intact to keep him warm! Currently it seems the only place to purchase NuStock is directly through the manufacturer’s website.
On the 6th day of Goating our amazing supporters gave to us: Hay Bags! Since there is little vegetation for the goats to eat during winter their diet turns to hay until greens are available again in spring time. Our goats enjoy eating out of hanging hay bags but are very rough on them, creating large holes so that a lot of hay falls out and is wasted. We have found one heavy duty hay feeder bags from Chewy that is made with thick strong fabric that our goats have been unable to destroy (after a few winters of use)! We would love to replace all of our current hay bags so we don’t continue to waste hay and more bags.
On the 7th day of Goating our amazing supporters gave to us: Curicyn Wound Care Clay! This is another helpful topical cream that can be found on our Chewy wish list! This do-it-all product is very helpful on open wounds and reducing inflammation. The aloe and clay ingredients in this ointment offer a cooling sensation that the goats seem to enjoy especially if they have a cut on a hot summer day! It is also helpful for foot wounds.
On the 8th day of Goating our amazing supporters gave to us: Vetericyn Plus Antimicrobial Hydrogel Healing Aid Spray! Yet another item from our Chewy wish list that we like to stock in our med kits! It is the first step in most of our treatments for cuts and scrapes as it keeps the area clean and moisturized, leading to a quicker recovery!
On the 9th day of Goating our amazing supporters gave to us: Ear Rinse! One of the most frequent questions we get is “What happened to that goat’s ears?”, referring to some of our goats with small or “non-existent” ears. The answer is: it’s their breed - they were born that way! Through the years LaMancha goats developed short ears, with some looking like they have no ear at all. Because they don’t have a large external ear to protect the ear from debris, LaMancha goats often get dirty ears that need to be cleaned. We would love to get this Vetericyn Plus Antimicrobial Pet Ear Rinse from our Chewy wish list to help ensure our LaManchas, like Lynette, have clean ears!
On the 10th day of Goating our amazing supporters gave to us: Goat Electrolytes! As you know summer days can get HOT. On those days our goats are still hungry and out in their greenspaces eating up unwanted vegetation! We like to provide our animals with electrolytes to help them replenish their nutrient and hydration levels faster. (Think of it as the goats drinking some Gatorade after a hard workout, in addition to plenty of water, of course.) We would love these goat electrolytes from Tractor Supply to get us prepared for next season.
On the 11th day of Goating our amazing supporters gave to us: Loose Minerals! Have you ever seen our goats out and about and wondered what the brown sandy stuff is that they are eating out of a trough? It’s their loose minerals! When the goats are on the job, they receive most of their nutrients in the plants they eat, but there are times when forage may be deficient in certain minerals based on soil quality. Minerals are important for goats to supplement their diet while out on the job in the summer, or munching away at hay in the winter. We leave them out for the goats to consume at their discretion as they are good at knowing when their bodies need a mineral boost! These minerals from Tractor Supply are great for the goats!
On the 12th day of Goating our amazing supporters gave to us: Diatomaceous Earth! Diatomaceous Earth is great to use on our goats and donkeys to prevent lice, ticks, and fleas. We apply it directly to each animal’s coat as well as sprinkle it on the floor in their winter homes as it can aid in drying wet spots in barns. We would love more of these large bags from Chewy!
